Best of the Left - It shouldn't matter, but it does (racism)

This is a really great episode about racism in America today, but the commentary at the end, concerning the film “Bully” and its failure to include details about the bullied persons in it, gave me chills.  Definitely recommend checking out the commentary, if you don’t listen to the whole episode.  Jay did a commentary at the end of the previous two episodes that tie into this one, so if you want to listen to the whole commentary as it’s supposed to be, you’ll have to listen to the end of those as well.

Note: I DID NOT MAKE THIS!

This is disgusting.
If Sandra Fluke is a slut, so am I.  I’m getting my IUD next week, and guess what? My insurance is covering ALL of it.  I’m lucky like that. So I’m going to do cartwheels in and out of that office shouting I’M A SLUT and I will be damn proud of it. And I am so proud of my president for his stance on this.
Fuck off social conservatives.  We’re in 2012, having to still argue over contraception is getting old.

Blacking it Up

I don’t think I’ve ever recommended anything before (because who takes me seriously?) but I have to just put this here for anyone who’s interested.  I listen to a lot of talk radio/podcasts because my job lets me listen to things while I’m working (according to my Stitcher app I’ve listened to 786 hours since February 27th of last year) and I’ve only recently stumbled upon this podcast (which makes me sad to think how much I haven’t listened to), and I’ve never really heard anything like it before.

The hosts are all POC and the commentary on everything, but especially race, is just excellent.  It’s hilarious and when I’m having a terrible day at work, it makes me laugh. If you need a place to start, I’d recommend starting on episode 207, with Baratunde Thurston.  It’s a really awesome interview.

So just sayin.  And if perchance anyone reads this has any podcast suggestions, I’m always looking for new things to listen to. :)

"The Atomic States of America": Exploring a Nation’s Struggle with Nuclear Power

From Democracy Now!  This was a crazy informative and sort of chilling interview.

Nuclear power has drawn wide support from both sides of the aisle, with both Republicans and Democrats advancing a pro-nuclear agenda even in the aftermath of last year’s Fukushima disaster in Japan. We speak with Sheena Joyce, co-director of the new documentary “The Atomic States of America,” which is featured at 2012 Sundance Film Festival. We’re also joined by Kelly McMasters, whose book “Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir from an Atomic Town” inspired the film. Joyce says, “We used Kelly’s book and the town of Shirley as kind of a springboard into the issue, to just talk to people really on both sides, but mainly to speak to the people in reactor communities… We wanted to seek an intelligent dialogue.

Legalized murder is not justice.  The death penalty is not a deterrent.  The legal system is not foolproof, as we know by prisoners being taken off death row due to DNA evidence.  In a country where we value life so much that so many of us feel that it has to be guarded from the moment of conception, why is it that we still kill people when there might be a chance that they are innocent?
This is barbaric, and this is shameful.
